Southeast Texas leaders see future in renewable energy By SARAH MOORE August 18, 2010
BEAUMONT, Texas - Before the Lucas oil gusher, only a few visionaries foresaw the potential in Spindletop's salt dome.
But even they did not fully realize the sleeping giant beneath their feet that would spawn the petrochemical industry. A century later, Southeast Texas business and civic leaders foresee the region's continuing leadership in energy by embracing clean, renewable energy technologies.
"The oil and gas business started here at Spindletop in 1909," said James Steffek, president of American Electric Technologies. "We also want to be a leader in clean energy in Texas."
Wednesday, American Electric Technologies showcased some of its wind and solar power systems at a gathering to discuss the findings of a clean energy study and its implications for the future of Texas' energy industry.
The report, "The Texas Clean Energy Economy: Where we are. Where we're going. What we need to succeed" released Wednesday by the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation, outlined some of the potential benefits renewable technologies such as solar, wind and biomass could bring to Texas in the next decade.
